I think you guys might be selling the Bible short. Take Jeptha, for instance. Yes, he did what you said he did…however, does the narrator say that we should follow suit? What about Gideon? He makes an ephod that becomes a snare to him and his family…we aren’t supposed to make idols, and we aren’t supposed to sacrifice humans.
As to death penalty for kids talking back, I have one question: What is the penalty for any sin?
I tend to think the laws like this show us more of a glimpse of God’s forbearance, in that a dad is probably not going to stone his son if he speaks back, but even something so seemingly trivial has deep repercussions.
